Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum serves as a center point of the Winston-Salem Entertainment-Sports Complex. The facility’s flexible design offers a variety of seating and stage options to efficiently accommodate many types of performances.
The coliseum was named for Lawrence Joel, the only native of Winston-Salem who has been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest combat award. Joel, an Army medic who passed away in 1984, was recognized for having saved the lives of 13 fellow soldiers during a Viet Cong attack north of Saigon on November 8, 1965. Although twice wounded in the legs by enemy gunfire, Joel crawled across the battle area for more than 24 hours, administering aid to his comrades.
Opened in 1989, the 15,000 seat Coliseum is home to Wake Forest University men's and women's basketball, The Coliseum hosted the NCAA Mens Basketball Championship First and Seconds rounds in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2007, many concerts including Elton John, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks 4 sold out shows, Dave Matthews, 50 Cents, Jay-Z, Cher, The Dixie Chicks, Zac Brown Band and lots more, family shows like the Harlem Globetrotters, Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus and Walking With Dinosaurs, The Live Experience , Professional Tennis with 3 Davis Cup Ties, Bullriding including the PBR, A speech on homeland security from former President George W. Bush, a campaign appearance from President Barrack Obama, dinners, conventions, and more! It is also the recent home of the MEAC mens and womens basketball tournament.
Concessions in the Coliseum are managed by Aramark Sports & Entertainment Services. The concession stands offer everything from hot dogs and boardwalk fries, to ice cream, popcorn, and candy. The Food Court is also available for select events as well. Patrons choose from local specialty vendors such as Bojangles, Red, Hot & Blue Barbecue, Domino's Pizza, Blue Ridge/Deweys Ice Cream and more. All catering requirements are handled by our in house catering department.
Backstage offices feature press rooms, production offices and general meeting rooms. The Coliseum is fully accessible to the handicapped and has paved parking for over 5,000 vehicles.
